Please, Just a Black And White Night

This started off as a search for a black and white dress, an elegant dress, one that is fit for beauty queens shimmering through the night with long black silk gloves on sipping from champagne glasses with perfect lipstick impressions planted confidently along the edge of the nights caress.

Then I found Kendra Spears photographed by Claudia Knoepfel and Stefan Indlekofer for Vogue Paris, May 2012 and I had to look no further; immediately enchanted I was and whisked off to a romance I had only to don my black rimmed Ray-Bans and pilot my Rolls Royce and precious cargo to the evenings gala.

I love the stockings, not to mention the hair..

Seek Peace, Seek Changu, Nepal

Changu Village, located in the heart of Nepal just North East of Kathmandu, is known specifically for the ancient temple Changu Narayan, considered Nepal’s oldest temple.

The temple is a dedication to Lord Visnu, who is known as the supreme soul (paramatman), or supreme God (parameshwara).

The temple is old, but it’s been restored, like all ancient buildings must at one time be. Documents found within the temple during the Licchavi King Mandeva reign (~464 AD) prove that the site was established as a sacred center for the Hindu around the 3rd century AD. The building itself was restored to its current state around the 17th century, and is one of the finest examples of the pagoda architecture typical of the area with its metal and wood carvings throughout.

The legend goes that a cow herder, a Gwala, bought a cow from a Brahman that was supposed to produce a lot of milk. The Gwala took the cow out to pasture every day, and in the evening he would milk the cow, and after a few days he became very disappointed with the cow for it was hardly producing any milk! So,  upon consulting the Brahman they decided to monitor how the cow roamed in the woods and see if something funny was happening. Sure enough, as the two of them hid themselves, the cow would go and sit in the shade of a champak tree, and out from the tree a black boy would emerge and take all the milk. Enraged, the Gwala cut down the tree, but as he did this, human blood began to spill out of the tree. Devestated, both the Brahman and Gwala began to cry, but soon emerged Vishnu who explained to them that many years ago he also had committed a punishable sin by killing Shudarshan’s father unknowingly while hunting in the forest. He had been cursed to wander and ended up Changu where he survived only on the stolen milk of a cow. By cutting down the tree, the Gwala had actually freed Vishnu of his curse! After this, both the Brahman and Gwala worshipped Vishnu.

There is actually still evidence of Brahman Sudashan in the temple.

Where will your next destination be?

Yes, Metallica!

Metallica: a band from formed in LA displaced to San Fran.
Born: 1991.

That’s over 30 years now of kick-ass, loud, in your face metal. There is no denying that they catapulted the genre of metal into existence. Before them, we’re left thinking about bands like ACDC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Mötorhead, Deep Purple (if I may)… I’m by no means exhausting this list, but the fact remains that there was nobody before with the same rhythmic intensity that Metallica had, and now continues to have in spite the ruthless critics. Granted ACDC was epic beyond proportions, but they lacked something deeper that Metallica has. Continue Reading →

Alexandra Valenti is Up In Smoke

This article started off about fashion in smoke, then quickly turned to a profile of Alexandra Valenti after I looked at her photographs, where I found her smoke work.

Simply beautiful.

There are some artists you look at their work and you see a distance, a disconnect between personality and style. Then, there are other artists who integrate every essence of their body into what they capture with the lens. As an outside viewer, I almost get the feeling that I have just read Alexandra’s secret pages of a notebook she’s tirelessly drawn flowers, hearts, vines, and birds all over.

Oh, and she does it with some amazing style.

Men, That’s a Good Tie

The tie is the easiest thing to throw into a guy’s repertoire to get them feeling like a champion. Well, I guess I could argue that a collared shirt is the best thing, but I’m pretty sure it’s the tie. Or perhaps it’s the sleek vest that just fits like it’s been personally tailored.. Perhaps I’m just dreaming about a very light gray [almost white] shirt, perhaps a hint of a pinstripe, with a thin black tie, strapping vest and a blazer. There’s a clean shave, with hair that really defines sharp, and shoes that we just can’t start talking about now.

No, he’s not walking down the street with his blazer slung over his back, he’s a man: holding the door open for an equally smart woman…

Sacha Federowsky

Sacha Federowsky is a dreamer, typical French I guess… He sees things in memories and distal artifacts that capture you in a moment of peace. This is evident in his Les Fleurs Sont D’Excellentes Auditrices series where he explores the idea of transplanted flowers.

What seems to be a very effective way of displaying images, Sacha uses the 50/50 approach to his images, typically two different images, that both leave the viewer understanding, and then reaching for the edge of reason. This is a beautiful thing and it takes a lot of personal introspective glances to be able to understand and portray that which Sacha seems to do effortlessly.

His bio talks of his obsession with the series, any series: creating a series of photographs. One observes this by browsing his webpage and seeing how he organizes it. Whenever I browse an artists work as such, I always feel like they approach life with a certain tenderness that not many other people can understand, as it’s raw, until it’s displayed as a project.

I like this, I think it all makes sense.

She Had Flowers In Her Hair

Summer season brings out the gypsy in most people, throwing the long black ball gowns in the closet and pulling out the cut up jeans and sandals, weaving flowers in their hair. We love the summer. We dream about it for the rest of the seasons, for a time when we can run in the sand with bare feet, or lay in the park upon green green grass and laugh the day away with friends.

When the night time comes, how do you keep the summer spirit though? We can hold onto it with loads of bracelets beautifying our wrists, but perhaps we want to get just a little bit different. Perhaps we’ll put some flowers back in our hair?

Jeans Are Cool

Jeans are cool, when they’re cut up, torn to pieces, sewn on in square patches, cut short enough to make old ladies blush, and wrapped around your head.

Jeans are cool with the sleeveless crop top, jeans are cool with a bikini top, jeans are cool with a wool throw, but for the love of god, JEANS ARE NOT GOOD WITH CROSS-TRAINING SHOES.

Perhaps as a general rule, the cross-trainer should never be worn unless you’re exercising. This is fashion, not practicality.

Back to the scene.

Can you see bare feet with jean cuffs hanging into the sand, big hearts in the sand, wind blowing hair into that messy beach hair?

Leave Everything, Go Rugged: Olkhon, Eastern Siberia

There are some places in the world that are still untouched. It’s very hard to believe when you look out the window of your 34th floor apartment, trying to ignore the people on the ground that look like little ants scurrying everywhere… but really it’s true!

Recently, BBC’s Travel (to the most remote places in the world) illuminated one of the gnarliest places I’ve ever heard about.

It’s name is Olkhon, and it’s an Island, and it’s located in Eastern Siberia, or for most people that’s Eastern Russia.

Wikipedia tells us that Olkhon Island is the third largest lake bound island in the world. It resides within Lake Baikal, which as you can see from the map above, is just North of Mongolia. Apparently the time to head there is in the middle of the summer. I bet it’s bloody cold any other time.

The island stretches 71.5 kms long and has cliffs along its surface that reach as high up at 1276 meters. The highest point along the island is Mount Zhima and it is 818 meters above the water level of the lake, on a calm day.

Olkhon has ~1500 people that live on it’s rocky land, who are mostly what are known as the Buryats (Buryat: Буряад, Buryaad), the aboriginals who are actually the largest aboriginal group in Siberia.

As the information goes, Olkhon is half way between Moscow and Beijing, which just happens to be the exact way the Trans-Siberian Express Railroad goes… One can only imagine some of the other sights that would greet the happy traveler along the road..

The following is from Uzury area, Olkhon Island, Baikal Lake.

So, this begs the questions: where is your next trip planned?

The Naked Back: Crystal and Chandeliers

The naked back is about as daring an evening gown can get. The raw edges of a shoulder-blade, the sweet line of the spine, and the tender curves of the latissimus dorsi muscles simply cause eyes to stare and jaws to drop.

Be warned though, an open backs with the bra showing through, unlike the sleeveless crop top, is a waste of the open back. Just let it go. I’d rather see a Motley Crew concert tee than an open back with the bra showing through..

The event is fairly elegant. There are chandeliers and slicked back hair. There are pearls and long black gloves that carry slender bags that shift effortlessly throughout the night. There are long legs and ties that cut through the glare. There are toes so pointy that the meat cutter gets jealous and even then, there is refined edge on everybody’s mind that keeps the red wine flowing through crystal glasses.

And no, this ain’t no high school prom..

Can you picture it?
